What are Ingrown Toenails?
Ingrown toenails are nails that are growing into the skin on the side of the nail. Ingrown toenails are painful, either from the nail itself piercing the skin, or from resulting infection that can occur.
There are many reasons why a toenail may become ingrown, such as your toenails being too wide for the nailbed or wearing shoes that are too narrow and compress the nails.
What treatment options are there for ingrown toenails?
Depending on the severity of the ingrown nail, you may wish to treat it conservatively, or by having the edge of the toenail surgically removed.
Conservative treatment involves trimming the side of the nail back to remove the portion that is piercing the skin. This provides immediate relief, however the nail will grow back. Depending on how the nail became ingrown initially will influence whether the nail becomes ingrown again when it regrows.
A nail surgery involves cutting out the side of the nail that is ingrown, and treating that portion of the nailbed to prevent the nail regrowing in that area. This provides a permanent solution to recurring ingrown toenails.
